Study Abroad in Costa Rica!
Spend three weeks exploring Costa Rica's famed natural wonders and learning about conservation and ecology of tropical systems. We tour the countryside visiting many of the country's national parks including Corcovado National Park on the Osa Peninsula, Palo Verde National Park, and Poas Volcano National Park. As we explore the area, we will discuss concepts in ecology - often at the very sites where the original concepts were studied. We will also learn about conservation, and the importance of balancing the needs of the local people with conservation of the natural resources in designing a successful program.

NRM 4324 Tropical
Conservation and Ecology (3 credits)
Study Abroad: An
introductory survey of tropical ecology and
conservation covering both theory and practice.
Although we will discuss some of the theoretical
underpinnings of modern conservation biology, our
primary focus will be to explore, hands-on, global
conservation case studies. Since conservation occurs
in a social context, we will spend considerable time
learning about the history and current culture of
Costa Rica, as well as the physical setting. We will
survey material from the variety of disciplines
important in conservation practice, including
ecology, economics, philosophy, and the social
sciences.
BIOL 4301 Tropical Ornithology (3 credits)
Study Abroad: Study of the birdlife of tropical ecosystems.
Focus on observations, identification and behavior.
NRM 6324 Advanced Tropical
Conservation and Ecology (3 credits)
Study Abroad: An advanced study of tropical ecology
and conservation covering both theory and practice.
Although we will discuss some of the theoretical
underpinnings of modern conservation biology, our
primary focus will be to explore, hands-on, global
conservation case studies.
BIOL 6301 Advanced Tropical
Ornithology (3 credits)
Study Abroad: Advanced study of the birdlife of tropical ecosystems.
Focus on observations, identification and behavior.
